March 14, 2011: Jessica Biel Lois Lane Rumor

When fans put together a wish list of casting choices for the next Superman movie the name "Jessica Biel" tends to pop up on many a fan's Lois Lane list. LaineyGossip.com claim the actress is indeed near the top of the list of candidates for the role...

I've been hearing from multiple sources lately that Biel is in consideration for at least two MAJOR profile projects working with MAJOR profile, very influential Hollywood players. The parts don't require much skill, if any, but they're looking for an attractive girl who can stand there and be the "girlfriend". And a lot of girls want this job. I'm told Jessica's very near the top of the list, if not at the top, specifically for a movie involving a dude who might, once in a while, fly around saving the world in a cape.

The "attractive girl who can stand there and be the 'girlfriend'" description doesn't sound much like Lois Lane in my opinion, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see if there's any truth to this rumor at all.

March 16, 2011: Superman Movie Timeframe Comparison

    By Steve Younis

I often see complaints from fans disappointed with the apparent lack of official announcements regarding the up-coming Superman movie. I thought it might be interesting to look back at "Superman Returns" and see how far in advance Warner Bros. made official announcements before the theatrical release of that film in June 2006.

While "Superman Returns" was released mid-year, this next Superman movie is scheduled for end of year 2012. So, to make a comparison, I'll post how many months prior to the film's release we received certain announcements. And while no official title for the up-coming film has been announced, for the sake of this article I'll refer to it as "Man of Steel".

To clarify, as of the writing of this article we are 1 year, 9 months from the scheduled release of the new film. An asterisk (*) indicates that the announcement was an official Warner Bros. press release. A hash (#) indicates that the person in question confirmed their involvement.

    NEWS ITEM
    SUPERMAN RETURNS
    MAN OF STEEL

    Director announced:
    1 year, 11 months*
    2 years, 2 months*

    Script writer announced:
    1 year, 11 months*
    2 years, 9 months#

    Composer confirmed:
    1 year, 11 months#
    Nothing yet

    Production Designer confirmed:
    1 year, 10 months#
    Nothing yet

    Superman casting announced:
    1 year, 8 months*
    1 year, 11 months*

    Lois Lane casting announced:
    1 year, 5 months*
    Nothing yet

    Lex Luthor casting announced:
    1 year, 5 months*
    Nothing yet

    Jimmy Olsen casting announced:
    1 year, 5 months*
    Nothing yet

    Martha Kent casting announced:
    1 year, 4 months*
    1 year, 9 months*

    Start of filming:
    1 year, 3 months*
    Nothing yet

The announcements on the director (Zack Snyder) and script writer (David Goyer) for "Man of Steel" were well in advance of those for "Superman Returns". Admittedly we don't have any news on a composer or production designer for the new movie yet. The casting news on Superman/Clark Kent for "Man of Steel" came out around 3 months earlier than it did for "Superman Returns". Even earlier for the casting of Martha Kent.

As we're still roughly 1 year and 9 months away from the scheduled release of the new movie, if we use the release schedule of announcements from "Superman Returns" as a comparison, we may see further casting announcements any time between now (1 year, 9 months) and July (1 year, 5 months).

"Superman Returns" started filming approximately 1 year, 3 months before its theatrical release. 1 year and 3 months before December 2012 (the scheduled release of "Man of Steel") would be around September/October 2011. Rumor had it they were scheduled to start filming in August.

At the end of the day, no two movies are ever created the same way. Therefore the above comparisons should not be considered to be anything more than an interesting observation.

March 16, 2011: Diane Lane Discusses Playing Martha Kent

Zap2It.com asked Diane Lane how she felt about being cast as Martha Kent for the up-coming Superman movie, starring Henry Cavill as her adopted son.

"It's daunting, but in a very healthy way," Lane tells Zap2it of tackling the iconic part played most recently on the CW series "Smallville" by Annette O'Toole. "It's like a dare. I have heard and read many people say, 'Do what scares you. Don't run from it, run toward it.' I am delighted to be challenged with the opportunity.

"Zack Snyder said wonderful things in the press release, and I was like, 'Well, it's like he threw down the white glove. Now I have to bend down and pick it up.' It's wonderful, though. He's a visionary, and he'll create his own version. I find that very refreshing. People love to talk about things, and this will definitely be something to talk about."

Read the complete article at Zap2It.com.

USA Weekend has also published an article on Diane Lane...

In preparation, Lane recently watched another comic book movie, Watchmen, again "to remind myself of what an audacious, brilliant man Zack Snyder is," she says. "I love 300 and I'm very flattered to play Martha Kent and live up to his vision. It's pretty cool." Lane, who can be seen next in the HBO film Cinema Verite, airing April 23 (and which we'll have more about next month), is stoked about having Superman as a son. "I've always wanted to raise a good man," she quips. "I thought that was the biggest challenge a woman could have, and so I get the embarrassment of riches."

March 16, 2011: Snyder Not a Slave to Previous Superman Movies

The LA Times interviewed Zack Snyder and asked him all about his up-coming new Superman movie. Snyder explained that this new movie would come from the point of view as if there'd never previously been any Superman movies. "Respect the canon but don't be a slave to the movies," he said.

"Literally, the one thing that everyone can start to think about is that we're making a movie that finally goes with the approach that there's been no other Superman movies," Snyder said. "If you look at 'Batman Begins,' there's that structure, there's the canon that we know about and respect but on other hand there's this approach that pre-supposes that there haven't been any other movies. In every aspect of designand of story, the whole thingis very much from that perspective of respect the canon but don't be a slave to the movies."

I mentioned to Snyder that in hindsight the Singer film might have beenboxed in by the past andtoo tentative - the movie seemed at times like a cautious curator trying to move around among fragile museum pieces. "Yeah, and we're not afraid of that at all," Snyder said. "Our Superman, he's got things to figure out but he's a physical cat."

Read the complete LA Times article to hear Snyder's thoughts on other up-coming casting announcements, what it's like collaborating with Christopher Nolan, his excitement over bringing Superman back to contemporary moviegoers, and when we might see Henry Cavill in the Superman costume.

Welcome to the 88th episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast! This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Part index. Part commentary. Part history lesson. All podcast.

It is a packed week, folks as Mike and Jeff finish not only their coverage of BLACKOUT but of the cover year 1991 as well. Then in ACTION COMICS #672 Superman is back but what is the deal with this Lex Luthor II? Clark and Lois get to the bottom of it. After going through the ads for the month the boys discuss (briefly) ADVENTURES OF SUPERBOY #21, tell you what else was going on in the DCU at the time (Mike liked FLY #5 so much he mentions it twice) and finally there are a handful of e-mails to read and comment on.

Cover year 1991 is over. Five full years of Superman books down... fifteen to go.

Next week: 1992 begins with SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL #7 and SUPERMAN #62.

March 17, 2011: Kevin Costner Confirmed as Jonathan Kent

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Kevin Costner will play Jonathan Kent, the father who raised Clark Kent as his own son, in the new Superman movie to be directed by Zack Snyder.

Snyder stated, "Jonathan Kent is the only father figure Clark has ever had, the man who was there to help Clark understand what he was meant to do in the world as Superman. Kevin will be able to communicate the quiet strength of this rural American man who raised the greatest super hero of all time."

Costner will star alongside Diane Lane, who plays his wife, Martha, and the film's star, Henry Cavill, who will play the new Clark Kent/Superman.

Costner most recently starred in 2010's "The Company Men," and is currently in development on the comedy "The One." He has won two Academy Awards®, for producing and directing the epic "Dances with Wolves," also garnering a nomination for Best Actor. He has also starred in a wide range of memorable films, including "The Untouchables," "No Way Out," "Bull Durham," "Field of Dreams," "JFK," "The Bodyguard," "Wyatt Earp," "Tin Cup" and "Swing Vote," to name a few.

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

The new Superman movie will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Henry Cavill, the star of the up-coming Superman movie, will reportedly be attending WonderCon 2011, along with fellow cast members of his new film "Immortals".

"Immortals" will make its worldwide debut at WonderCon across April 1-3, with cast members and filmmakers to present first footage of the film and participate in a panel discussion. On Saturday, April 2nd cast members will be on hand to sign autographs for fans from 2.00pm.

As a power-mad king razes ancient Greece in search of a legendary weapon, a heroic young villager rises up against him in a thrilling quest as timeless as it is powerful.

When Theseus meets the Sybelline Oracle, Phaedra (Freida Pinto), her disturbing visions of the young man's future convince her that he is the key to stopping the destruction. With her help, Theseus assembles a small band of followers and embraces his destiny in a final desperate battle for the future of humanity.

March 20, 2011: Golden Age Superman Podcast - Episode 12

Superman fan Jon Wilson has put together a Golden Age Superman podcast covering every appearance of the character from Action Comics #1 forward.

Welcome to a new era in Golden Age Superman, as I say goodbye to the days where Superman was only ever published in one book. This week, I'll be taking a look at Action Comics #12, where Superman declares war on reckless drivers, but is a bit reckless himself in the process. Then it's a trip to the World's Fair with the Man of Tomorrow in New York World's Fair Comics. With more books come more minutes spent talking about them, so this episode is a bit longer than they have usually been, but that's going to be more common as we move forward. So come along into this new chapter in the life of the Man of Steel!

March 21, 2011: Zack Snyder Talks About Henry Cavill

MTV.com spoke with Zack Snyder at his press day (on March 18th) for his new movie "Sucker Punch" and asked him about selecting Henry Cavill to play Superman/Clark Kent over his second choice, Joe Manganiello.

"Henry's just ... I love Joe too, by the way," Snyder said. "Really he was the only other guy I was thinking of, to be honest, other than Henry. But in the end, I think Henry just has this innocence too [in addition to the look and physicality required for the role], he has both, which is tricky," he explained. "Superman needs the teeniest bit of that. Not to be overt, but you like it to be there ever so slightly. I mean, he grew up in Kansas, that's just true, so you need a little of that [innocence]."

March 21, 2011: Zack Snyder Hints at Physical Superman

Zack Snyder participated in media interviews about his new movie "Sucker Punch", with Collider.com asking him about Superman and whether we'll see the Man of Steel punch someone in the face...

"I can't say if he punches someone in the face, because that is a spoiler. But I will say that Superman, in the film that we are making, is a very physical cat that does some physical s#@t. I don't want to say anything about the last film, but I want to see Superman kicking some ass."

    Source: Collider.com.

ScreenRant.com also interviewed Snyder and asked him about the visual style of his Superman movie...

I think the visual style of "Superman," though I can't say for certain as it's early, but I kind of feel like - and I did say to the studio - that what's cool for me and interesting, and odd, is that "Superman" is probably going to be the most realistic movie I've ever made. It's kind of fun that the most realistic movie I probably will make is a movie called "Superman." Which shows how crazy my other movies are. Because I guess for him to be credible... He gets more credible by the reality that you can bring to him, you know emotionally, and visually, I think.

When asked what sort of physical preparation Henry Cavill would face for his role as Clark Kent/Superman, given the months of training the young ladies of Sucker Punch went through in preparation for that film, Snyder replied laughingly, "Henry's gonna be hitting the iron pretty hard."

Snyder's wife, Deborah, stressed that "he's working right now." In fact, the moment they hired Henry they had him meet with Mark Twight of Gym Jones (who had trained all of the actors in 300) and Damon Caro, who does all the fight training."They've put him on a plan," she continued, "he's started in England and as of April 1st we have him full time with us for all that training."

March 21, 2011: Zack Snyder Talks About the Need for a Superman Movie

HollywoodOutbreak.com has posted an audio interview with Zack Snyder and his wife/co-collaborator Deborah where they talk about the up-coming Superman movie and how they became involved in the project.

"I think Superman is broken and needs to be fixed (from a movie stand point). He is the biggest superhero on the planet, the father of every superhero."

"I'm like really Thor? Thor has a movie? And there is no Superman movie? It's like the world is out of balance. It's like we lost our minds here people, come on!"

"When Chris (Nolan) and Emma (Thomas) asked Debbie and I to go to lunch they told us their story of what they wanted to do with Superman. And before that I was like 'I don't know, Superman?'." Deborah interjects, "I said to Zack 'I don't really know about this'. Well, let's go see what they have to say, and we both left saying, 'This is great!'" Zack continues, "Yeah because I go 'yeah, this is right'. I didn't need to hear that much before I go, 'Ok this is right. That's the right way to do it'. From my point of view at this point it's so needed. That it's hard. And I am a fan of the character. I want him to be awesome."

March 21, 2011: Zack Snyder Talks Superman Movie

In another of his "Sucker Punch" press interviews, director Zack Snyder told film critic Jake Hamilton that in his up-coming Superman movie, "There could be a character in the movie that other people might refer to as Superman".

A character that others might refer to as Superman? What character is there that isn't Superman that people might refer to as Superman? Some people think he might be referring to Bizarro or Zod? However, I seriously think that he's just being facetious and that he's actually just referring to Superman himself.

You'll find Snyder's comment at the 5 minute mark in the YouTube video.

March 22, 2011: Snyder on Casting Jonathan and Martha Kent

io9.com recently interviewed Zack Snyder and asked him about his up-coming Superman movie, whether he'd take a stylized approach, and about his decision to cast Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as Jonathan and Martha Kent.

I think the thing you realize when you look at Diane and Kevin, in our decision to cast them so far, you sort of get a sense of how tonally we're looking at the movie, and what you realize is that those guys are serious actors, and we're taking this seriously in terms of the tone of having those guys. You're talking about having a situation where whatever the action is or whatever the drama of the movie is, our first priority is to make sure it's rendered in the most realistic way we can get at.

Is Viggo Mortensen still a person of interest in Superman now that he's locked into Snow White?

Zack Snyder: Yeah Viggo is not going to be in the movie let's say that right now. I can clear that up.

Can you elaborate where you are at with the film?

Zack Snyder: Yeah, we're just in pre-production right now, we're working every day trying to get it together and it's looking awesome and we are going to probably start shooting at the end of the summer.

March 23, 2011: James Robinson Talks Doomsday vs. JLA

ComicBookResources.com caught up with writer James Robinson to talk to him him "Justice League of America #55", which throws Doomsday into the already established Eclipso story running within the monthly title. Here's an excerpt from the interview...

So, you're moving along nicely, telling a multi-layered story and then all of sudden, whammo! -- Doomsday crash lands in your book! Is he the big elephant in the room or were you able to make his appearance tie into the other things you're doing?

First off, he's a great character but yes, it was odd that in the second part of an arc of mine, the main story kind of takes a bit of a back seat to Doomsday in "Justice League of America" #55. But I managed to tie it all together so that certain characters are in certain places and everything in the two storylines is kind of organically, hopefully, feeding off of each other to a degree.

In terms of those sorts of challenges, where you are rolling along and then suddenly you have an issue that involves a completely incongruous element based on the bigger picture of the DC Universe -- and I'm sure it happens to writers working in the Marvel Universe as well -- it just goes with the territory. I remember back when I was writing "Starman," which was a much more closed off part of the DC Universe, those types of things like tie-ins and crossovers, although I did them, there wasn't as much of a demand for me to do that. But if you're writing a book like "Justice League of America" and you don't expect those things to happen, you're an idiot. Of course they're going to happen! You have to regard them as part of the job and a fun challenge to try and rise to the occasion and meet. Hopefully I've done that.

March 23, 2011: Zack Snyder Talks About Superman Schedule

ComingSoon.net also recently spoke to Zack Snyder about the release of his film "Sucker Punch", and asked him a few questions about Superman.

CS: Obviously, it's early to tell and I don't know what your timeframe is, but do you have a date when you're shooting for or is that up in the air until you actually start filming?

Snyder: For "Superman"? No, we're going to shoot it at the beginning of August.

CS: But do you have a release date yet? Because at one point, it was going to be released during Christmas time 2012 which is getting pretty crowded.

Snyder: Oh, for the release? Well, I don't know to be quite honest with you. They're just screwing around with the release. I'm just going to make the movie and let them determine when they're going to put it out. It is Superman after all.

CS: Any idea when we'll hear more cast announcements for the movie? A lot of people are getting really excited to hear who else will be in it.

Snyder: I know I think that, too. Soon, soon. I can't say exactly when but I think you should stay tuned. The movie is growing and getting more awesome every day, so it's good.
