June 20, 2011: Kelly Sue DeConnick Talks Supergirl

A sleep-deprived Kelly Sue DeConnick spoke with Newsarama.com about writing Supergirl, why these pre-relaunch comics matter, and how Kara and Lois work together.

Nrama: Another big part of the story is that it's a Kara/Lois team-up. They've got an interesting relationship; they're the two most famous female characters in the Superman mythos - and among the two most recognizable female characters in all of comics - but don't really have a lot of shared experiences at this point in continuity. What kind of fun has it been getting to explore their dynamic?

DeConnick: They're so very different - and I like that. Kara's cool, Lois is brash. Lois is about as woman as woman gets; Kara's navigating her way into womanhood. They're oil and water, but I mean that in the way that oil and water swirl together and make an interesting design. Like that pretty paper I bought in Venice. If I meant they clashed, I'd say they were an acid and a base. Like, you know, a fourth grade volcano.

Oh god. I need to sleep.

    Day 1 - Thursday, June 9, 2011

In this first video we see the opening skit and ribbon cutting ceremony that officially opens the 2011 Superman Celebration.

While Superman is the reason many attend the annual Superman Celebration in the first place, it is the friends who become like family that have many people returning year after year. Superman fan Stephanie Perrin chats about the fun and festivities the Superfriends of Metropolis have each year. Also, recent flooding caused much destruction to many homes and businesses throughout the local area. We walk through the devastated Baymont Hotel and talk with Supermuseum owner Jim Hambrick about what it was like for him as the waters rose.

  • June 15, 2011: Russell Crowe Cast as Jor-El?

Variety.com reports that Russell Crowe is close to being cast in the role of Jor-El for the up-coming "Man of Steel" film.

The mercurial Aussie is in negotiations to take the role in "Man of Steel," which Zack Snyder is on board to direct with Brit thesp Henry Cavill set to play Superman. Warner Bros. had no comment on Crowe's casting.

With production set to start next month, Jor-El was one of the last roles to cast, though they also are looking for a big name to play Superman's biological mother.

Brando was 54 when he appeared in Richard Donner's 1978 classic; Crowe is 47. Other names that had gone out for the role included Sean Penn and Clive Owen, Crowe was the final choice.

    Source: Variety.com.

In additional news, a fan-made "Man of Steel" facebook page scanned in a snippet from the Production Weekly (an Entertainment Industry publication) which states that Crowe's Gladiator co-star Connie Nielsen has been offered the role of Lara, while Harry Lennix (who also starred with Crowe in State of Play) is also being courted for an as-yet unspecified role.

June 16, 2011: Berganza and Harras Talk New DCU

Newsarama.com caught up with DC Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras and Executive Editor Eddie Berganza to get some answers regarding the up-coming relaunch of the DC Universe in September. Here's an excerpt from the interview on some questions relating to Superman comic books...

Nrama: As any informed comic book fan knows, changes to iconic characters rarely "sticks." We all remember Superman Blue and other costumes that eventually got back to iconic looks, and we've seen characters come back from the dead. Should fans even regard these changes as anything but a phase - a temporary status quo that will give way to the more familiar version?

Harras: I think this time, honestly, we've taken a lot of care making sure we look at what works for each and every character. We love these characters so we've taken an extreme amount of care to look at what we want to do.

I think what we've got coming is really exciting. I think people are going to be really happy with what they see in September, and I think people are going to be excited. I'm looking forward beyond that, to just hear people as they discover this amazing stuff.

Berganza: I think there's a little more reality to the approach we're doing on the costumes, so I think that will enable them to exist for a long time.

Nrama: No doubt you're aware of the sect of fans who have not been happy about the changes they see, or at least appear to see at this stage. As you speak to fans who are excited as well as those who aren't, what would you say to them?

Berganza: Keep an open mind! It's like opening TV guide and it's a whole new season.

May 30, 2011: Superman Celebration Schedule of Events

Superman Returns' star, Brandon Routh, headlines Metropolis Superman Celebration June 9-12

    Other special guests:

    Superman Returns' Sam Huntington

    Smallville's Alaina Huffman

    Superman IV's Mark Pillows

    Superboy's Tracy Lewis

    Numerous Comic Artists

One of Metropolis' biggest weeks of the year is drawing near. From Thursday, June 9, through Sunday, June 12 the town of fewer than 7000 people will become a real metropolis, or at least close to it, as thousands of visitors from around the country, and even around the world, visit for the 33rd annual Superman Celebration.

"It's a chance for people of all ages to come together and just enjoy a weekend of fun," explained Superman Celebration chairman, Karla Ogle. "You never know who you'll meet...and you never know what you'll see!"

The Celebration will include a Smallville tent where free children's activities are held each day, the "Man of Steel" tent where super strength competitions will draw interest, and the "Metro" tent were live music will be performed daily. "And, our Artist's Alley will welcome visitors as a place to learn about the creation of comic books," Ogle explained.

Many popular events are returning to this year's line-up including Celebrity autograph sessions, $1000 Costume Contest, Super Car Show, Supertrek Bike Ride, The George Awards and Auction, Superman Trivia, Color-A-Cape for kids, Super Dog Contest, and Supergirl and Superboy pageants, just to name a few.

Superman fans will have the chance to become an "Honorary Citizen of Metropolis" during the Celebration. Citizen certificates will be available for purchase at the Metropolis Chamber of Commerce during the Celebration and the mayor of Metropolis will conduct a "swearing in" ceremony at the Superman Statue.

The first inductee to the Metropolis Walk of Heroes will be announced at the Superman Statue on Friday evening. The Walk of Heroes will soon be constructed along the sidewalk between the Superman Statue and the Noel Neil statue.

As always, a big draw for Superman enthusiasts is the lineup of celebrities. Headlining this year's festival is Brandon Routh, who portrayed Superman and Clark Kent in the 2006 film, Superman Returns. When director Bryan Singer came aboard the project he insisted an unknown actor be cast in the part, in the tradition of the casting of the best-known film Superman, Christopher Reeve.

Singer was impressed by Routh's resemblance to the comic book icon and found the actor's humble mid-western roots perfect for the role. Following Superman Returns, he has had several supporting roles in television and film. More recently, he portrays the eponymous protagonist of another comic book film, Dylan Dog: Dead of Night.

In addition to Routh, Metropolis' most famous son will be sharing the spotlight with Sam Huntington, Alaina Huffman, Mark Pillows and Tracy Roberts.

Since 1996 Sam Huntington has appeared in thirteen feature films and seven television shows. Of these he is perhaps most recognized for his role as the Daily Planet cub reporter, Jimmy Olsen, in Superman Returns.

Sam was recently seen as "Eric" in Fanboys and just wrapped production on Dead Of Night where he stars opposite his Superman Returns co-star, Brandon Routh. Sam can been seen on the SyFy channel's new critically acclaimed hit series Being Human where he plays werewolf/tortured soul "Josh".

Canadian film and television actress Alaina Huffman portrays Dinah Lance/Black Canary on Smallville. She is also a regular cast member in the TV series Stargate Universe. Huffman has had roles in NCIS, Dawson's Creek and CSI: NY.

Routh, Huntington and Huffman will all participate in a Q&A Session at the Metro Tent at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 11. They will also participate in autograph sessions throughout the day at Banterra Bank. More details about how to obtain a ticket is listed in the schedule below and on www.supermancelebration.net. (Tickets are free but are limited.)

Two of the special guests slated to appear at Artist Alley include Mark Pillow and Tracy Lewis.

Pillow's sole movie role was as "Nuclear Man" in Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. In the 1987 superhero film, the last of the Superman theatrical movies starring Christopher Reeve as the Man of Steel, Superman battles Lex Luthor and his creation, a solar-powered evil clone of Superman called Nuclear Man. There will be a special screening of Superman IV at Artist Alley at 8:30 p.m. on Friday night.

Tracy Roberts Lewis portrayed "Darla", one of Lex Luthor's partners in crime on the television series, Superboy, starring Gerard Christopher. Fans of the show may agree that her most memorable episode was Darla Goes Ballistic. This episode will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Artist Alley. Roberts took a haitus from acting to raise her two daughters, but has recently revived her career.

Artists and writers who create superheroes and tell of their adventures are always one of the highlights of the Metropolis Superman Celebration. And this year, fans will have the opportunity to meet several of these talented individuals during the four-day event.

Members of theMid-SouthCartoonist Association will run the programming at the popular Artist Alley & Writers Way. Comic artists Martheus Antone Wade and Andrew Chandler will present a two-part "Breaking in the Business of Comics" seminar. Among other artists to be on hand for special events are Jamal Igle, Freddie Williams and Josh Elder.

Hands-on workshops, discussion panels, and question and answer sessions will take place along with the annual Fan Film Competition, run by Tim Brown of Inked Monkey Productions. For specific Artist Alley guests and information, see the schedule of events at www.supermancelebration.net.

During the Metropolis Superman Celebration, visitors can sample food items at numerous cafes-on-wheels and browse sidewalk sales. The always-popular carnival brings all sorts of exciting rides, along with concessions, including corn dogs and cotton candy.

Right in the middle of all of the activities visitors will have the opportunity to pose with the world-famous 15-foot-tall bronze statue of Superman and the near life-size statue of Noel Neil as Lois Lane and tour the SuperMuseum, which holds the largest collection of Superman memorabilia in the world. There are other interesting super-hero related attractions located throughout the city including a giant rock of kryptonite.

Metropolis, Illinois is the only town with the same name as the fictional city made famous in comic books. It is located at the southern tip of Illinois where the Ohio River meets Paducah, Ky. A complete schedule of events for the Superman Celebration can be found at www.supermancelebration.net, or by calling the Chamber of Commerce at 800-949-5740. May 31, 2011: DC Comics to Relaunch DC Universe

The "bombshell" announcement that was set to be made at the Hero Complex convention has been dropped early, with USA Today reporting that DC Comics will re-number the entire spectrum of DC Universe titles, revamping Superman, Batman and other characters, starting with "Justice League #1".

In September, more than 50 more first issues will debut, introducing readers to stories that are grounded in each character's specific legend but also reflect today's real-world themes and events. [Jim] Lee spearheaded the redesign of more than 50 costumes to make characters more identifiable and accessible to comic fans new and old.

"We looked at what was going on in the marketplace and felt we really want to inject new life in our characters and line," says Dan DiDio, who co-publishes DC with Lee. "This was a chance to start, not at the beginning, but at a point where our characters are younger and the stories are being told for today's audience."

The Geoff Johns written "Justice League #1" will go on sale August 31, 2011.

Additionally, with this relaunch, DC Comics will make all renumbered titles available in digital format on the same day as their printed versions.

June 1, 2011: Richard Donner Talks Superman Movies

Ahead of his appearance at the Hero Complex Film Festival next week, where a screening of "Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut" will take place, the award-winning director spoke with the LA Times about Superman and Christopher Reeve specifically.

There's nobody that could have played that role the way he played it. I don't think anyone will ever come along and play it like he played it - others will have to play it different - and on top of that, he was a really special individual. A great kid, a great person, loving and devoted, agreat sense of humor and the personification of a good friend. He also made my career. I think about him an awfullot.

You can check out the interview with Richard Donner at the LA Times website.

Collider.com also sat down with Richard Donner and asked him a few questions about "Superman II", his feelings on CGI effects, and his thoughts on seeing his version of "Superman II" finally realized.

It's another long one this week, folks. Not as long as last week but the episode does go over the two hour mark, so consider this your heads up on that sort of thing.

This week is historic, faithful listeners. During cover date April 1992 Superman officially joined a certain super-team and to celebrate such a momentous event Mike and Jeff have brought back Jon M. Wilson to sit third chair and discuss not two but three comics! In JUSTICE LEAGUE SPECTACULAR #1 an amusement park is taken hostage leading to a whole bunch of heroes joining forces to take on the Royal Flush Gang. The end result of all that? The reformation of the Justice League! Then in ACTION COMICS #676 Hellgrammite finally makes his move on Lex Luthor II. Finally, in JUSTICE LEAGUE AMERICA #61 Superman proves that he is the man before and while the team battles the Weapons Master. After that the boys and guest discuss two more episodes of the ADVENTURES OF SUPERBOY series and what other events were occurring in the DC Universe when these books were published.

Remember to check out Jon's podcast GOLDEN AGE SUPERMAN right here at the Superman Homepage!

NEXT WEEK: Things go back to normal as the boys look at SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL #11 and SUPERMAN #67.

June 2, 2011: DC Comics Announces Printed/Digital Combo Packs

With the announcement earlier this week of the relaunch of the DC Universe in September, DC Comics also announced that digital versions of their comic books would be releases the same day as their printed counterparts. Today DC Comics revealed that they'll be releasing combo packs, which will allow readers to enjoy both the printed and digital versions for one small price.

Those who want a physical copy of JUSTICE LEAGUE to read and collect, as well as the ability to download it onto their favorite device for easy transport, get ready. Each print edition of the comic book and an individual code for digital download will be wrapped in a poly bag and available for $4.99. Separately, the standard version will retail for $3.99 and the digital version will retail for $3.99.

"As we continue to expand our readership and make our titles more accessible to readers everywhere, we're excited to provide our comic shop retail partners and their consumers with multiple formats of JUSTICE LEAGUE in one convenient place," said John Rood, EVP Sales, Marketing and Business Development.

Not only will Johns and Lee be collaborating for the first time, but their contemporary take on the origin of the comic book industry's premier superhero team will be available in DC Comics' historic first comic book combo pack.

Both digital and print editions of DC's comics will have parity pricing for the first four weeks of release; thereafter, the digital titles drop in price down to our standard 1.99 digital price point. Oversized issues, including JUSTICE LEAGUE #1, will start at $3.99 and drop to $2.99 after four weeks.

In a letter to comic book retailers DC's Bob Wayne explained...

To clarify from my last note, we will be at "price-parity" for same-day digital. No DC digital comic will be cheaper than its physical counterpart at launch. Same-day (a.k.a. "Day/Date") parity pricing is for the first four weeks of release; thereafter, the digital titles will follow our standard pricing, with $2.99 comics dropping in price to $1.99, $3.99 comics dropping in price to $2.99, and so forth. Keep in mind that our goal with our 52 new #1s will be to ensure that the physical comic book is more compelling than ever!

"Justice League #1" will hit shelves on August 31, with the new (post-Flashpoint) DC Universe titles being released in September.

June 5, 2011: Golden Age Superman Podcast - Episode 21

Superman fan Jon Wilson has put together a Golden Age Superman podcast covering every appearance of the character from Action Comics #1 forward.

Golden Age Superman is starting out a new year and a new decade. I'm back going solo this week to look at Action Comics #22, where Superman heads off to the war in Europe and runs into beautiful spies, intrigue, and massacre. Then in the newspaper strips, the stories take a different approach on the war, as Clark Kent takes a job with spies and saboteurs. Is it possible Clark Kent has turned traitor?

June 5, 2011: Christopher Reeve Superman Statue at Film Festival

Fans attending the Hero Complex Film Festival this coming weekend will be able to get their photo taken with a life-size statue of Superman in the likeness of Christopher Reeve, which was sculpted by British artist Mike Hill.

"I made this piece to remind me of my youth," the 42-year-old sculptor said. "As adults we forget the magic moments that forged our childhood dreams. For me 'Superman' still ignites that little boy who couldn't afford popcorn watching an uplifting and incredibly exciting superhero save the planet. I believed a man could fly ... and I still do."

The statue is a bit startling to behold and its creation was a complicated one. "This figure was sculpted in clay from various stills of Mr. Reeve," Hill said. "The sculpture was then reproduced in silicone rubber and fiberglass. The skin is painted in layers to reflect human skin tones. The acrylic eyes are custom made to match Reeves' own. Each hair is punched [into place] one at a time. The costume is an exact replica of the original."

June 5, 2011: DCUO Game Update 4 - Fortress of Solitude

Sony Online Entertainment recently released Game Update 3 for "DC Universe Online", the MMO RPG set in the DCU. Update 3 centers around Ra's Al Ghul, but IGN.com has discovered that Superman fans will get to help the Man of Steel defend the Fortress of Solitude in the up-coming Game Update 4. Below the video trailer you'll find an excerpt from an interview with Game Director Mark Anderson.

    More DC Universe Online Videos

IGN: As DC fanboy, I've dug the updates, but they've all been pretty Batman-centric in terms of locations and villains. As a representative of the House of El, will I be happy with Game Update 4? What's in it?

Mark Anderson: If you're into all things Kryptonian, I think you'll be very pleased with not only Game Update Four but also the next few updates. We've got to give the Man of Steel his due, and he can't be contained to a single update. To start off, we take you to the Fortress of Solitude where Brainiac continues on his march to absorb all that the Earth has to offer. With an army at his doorstep, Superman needs all the help he can get to stop Brainiac from using the powers of his home world against the people of Earth, even if it means developing a fragile alliance with one of his greatest enemies. This is the start of our next series of 8-player group content, and it's got some really jaw-dropping stuff.

June 6, 2011: Superman Parody - 1978 Ford Fiesta Commercial

Superman is so well-known to the public that some companies have used the character to advertise products without even mentioning him directly. A TV commercial from 1978 used a parody of the familiar "Faster than a speeding bullet..." litany from the 1950s Adventures of Superman TV series and a character named "Mr. Kent" to advertise the Ford Fiesta automobile.

A second version of this commercial ended with an imitation George Reeves "Clark" and an ersatz Phyllis Coates "Lois" expressing their approval of the Ford Fiesta while standing on a street similar of those used in the old TV series. A passing pedestrian then tells "Clark" that his cape is sticking out of his jacket. (This version of the commercial is apparently unavailable online.)

June 6, 2011: Metropolis Walk of Heroes Project

New Metropolis Walk of Heroes project to be unveiled Friday during Superman Celebration

A new attraction, the Metropolis Walk of Heroes, is scheduled to be unveiled on June 10 during the 33rd Annual Superman Celebration. This future walkway will showcase individuals who have ties to the two characters that have become landmarks in Metropolis: Superman and Lois Lane.

The project calls for the familiar diamond shape bronze shields to be set into the sidewalks along Market Street from Superman Square to Eighth St. The walkway will serve as a tribute to writers, artists, actors, actresses and others who have been a part of the Superman legacy in film, television and comic books.

The first shield will be unveiled at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, June 10 at the Superman Statue. This shield will be installed in the sidewalk in front of Mid Country Bank following the Superman Celebration. Over the years, the walkway will grow to include shields on both sides of Market Street along the 2 and a half block walk.

This concept has been discussed for several years according to Metropolis Tourism Director Angie Shelton. "Now that we have two statues in Metropolis, it feels like the right time to begin the Walk of Heroes," she explained. Shelton also noted that individuals and fan groups will have the opportunity to purchase shields for their favorite Superman actors and actresses in the future.

Metropolis Tourism will administer the Walk of Heroes project and will be working closely with Steven Kirk of Los Angeles, Calif. Kirk, who originally brought the Walk of Heroes concept to the city, is an annual visitor to Metropolis and participates in many Superman Celebration events. A volunteer committee will become a part of the Walk of Heroes project in the near future.

More information on the Metropolis Walk of Heroes will available on www.metropoliswalkofheroes.com soon.

June 8, 2011: Richard Donner Talks Superman, Zod and Henry Cavill

With today's release of "The Superman Motion Picture Anthology" Blu-ray collection, MTV.com has published an interview with Richard Donner, who talks about "Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut", his thoughts on Zod and Henry Cavill in the up-coming "Man of Steel" movie.

MTV: Well, one of the things that makes "Superman II" notable is that it featured the debut of Zod, who was so popular that he made the rare leap from the screen to comics. Now that we know he's also going to be in the new "Superman: Man of Steel" reboot that's coming up, do you feel some pride in seeing the character continue on and have such a legacy?

DONNER: No, not really... He's Zod. He doesn't belong to me. He belongs to the world of Krypton and he's just another part of the Superman anthology of villains. The best part about Zod is that he makes an incredibly worthy adversary for our hero. That's why he's so great.

MTV: What do you think of the upcoming reboot of the "Superman" franchise and the new lead, Henry Cavill?

DONNER: It's going to be really tough on this guy, but he's a wonderful actor and has a great director working with him. I think they'll do a sensational job, because I truly believe their dedication to the product is honest. That film that they're making, they believe in it, and that's all you need: a good director, and to believe in your project. You can't ask for more.

June 8, 2011: New-Look Superboy and Teen Titans

With the relaunch of the DC Universe set to take place in September, DC Comics today released details on the new-look Teen Titans and other young superteams.

Tim Drake is forced to step out from behind his keyboard when an international organization seeks to capture or kill super-powered teenagers. As Red Robin, he must team up with the mysterious and belligerent powerhouse thief known as Wonder Girl and a hyperactive speedster calling himself Kid Flash in TEEN TITANS #1, by Scott Lobdell and artists Brett Booth and Norm Rapmund.

io9.com interviewed DC co-publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee to the inside word on this new-look team...

Kid Flash, Superboy, and Wonder Girl are part of the Titans roster, but they don't look exactly look like themselves.

DD: All of these characters have history with the DC Universe that existed before the team is built, but it might be just slightly different. But I think in capturing the voice and the spirit of these characters, I think they're exactly who people think they are.

JL: There are going to be a lot of surprises.

June 9, 2011: New-Look Superman, Supergirl and Superboy

BleedingCool.com claim to have received leaked images of the up-coming redesigns for Superman, Supergirl and Superboy, which DC Comics are set to announce full details on tomorrow.

The Superman image is the cover to "Superman #1", which they speculate will be written and drawn by George Prez. There's speculation about Grant Morrison writing "Action Comics" with art by Rags Morales.

Note the lack of "underwear outside the trousers", the bulky segmented metallic boots, the armour-like seams around the suit, a rejuvenated age for the character and the slightly larger, but more traditional 'S' shield on the costume, rather than the version we saw on the Jim Lee Justice League #1 cover.

The cover image for "Supergirl #1", which they claim will be written by Michael Green and Mike Johnson, shows a very different Supergirl design, with a sharper "S" design to Superman's, higher boots and new cape clasping.

Superboy's cover image, appears to show the Teen of Steel hooked up to equipment that seems to be attaching costume parts to him. He doesn't appear to be fully formed (see his right hand), so this may be part of his "cloning" process.

While we may speculate on the how, why and what of these new-look designs, we expect the official announcement to come from DC Comics tomorrow.
