May 26, 2011: From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast

Welcome to the 96th episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast! This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Part index. Part commentary. Part history lesson. All podcast.

Welcome to a horrendously long episode of From Crisis to Crisis. Normally Mike and Jeff like to keep the show at the hour and a half/two hour mark. This time out, however, the episode is nearly three hours long. You could blame this on their guest, Jon M. Wilson, but the fact that the boys decided to break format this week and do not two but THREE different comics played a part as well.

Why three comics? Well, next week marks Superman's inclusion into the JUSTICE LEAGUE and that means Jeff and Mike are going to start covering JUSTICE LEAGUE AMERICA. However, there was a JUSTICE LEAGUE special before that, so this week you are getting three of the regular Superman titles and next week you get two JUSTICE LEAGUE related comics and the final Superman book all with a cover date of APRIL 1992!

PANIC IN THE SKY concludes this week in two and a half issues. Why two and a half? Because the final book the boys and Jon discuss has only a little to do with PANIC IN THE SKY. In SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL #10 one of the heroes sacrifices himself and leads to a lengthy debate about characterization and set-up. SUPERMAN #66 sees the heroes make their final stand against Brainiac and you will be surprised at who actually brings the villain down. Finally in ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN #489 PANIC IN THE SKY officially ends... ten pages in. The rest of the issue sets up yet another story with Professor Hamilton finally getting around to helping Husque and his sister after remembering his vow to do so. There is also a neat revelation about the collected edition of PANIC IN THE SKY. After that there is some ADVENTURES OF SUPERBOY television talk and what else was going on in the world around the time these comics were on the stands.

Mike and Jeff would like to thank Jon Wilson for appearing on the show again. You can find Jon's own Superman podcast, GOLDEN AGE SUPERMAN, right here at the SUPERMAN HOMEPAGE!

NEXT WEEK: JUSTICE, ACTION and JUSTICE again! Plus Jon Wilson returns.

You can subscribe to the show in two ways. First there is the RSS Feed and there is also the iTunes link. You can also download the episode directly.

If you want to comment on the show or contact the hosts you can always private message Mike and Jeff, leave comments here or email them at fromcrisistocrisis@gmail.com. All questions, concerns, fears, trepidations and cheap shots are welcome.

May 26, 2011: Superman Tribute Fence Damaged by Car

Seems that Cleveland, Ohio can't win a trick when it comes to anything Superman related. First thieves stole a historical plaque about Superman's co-creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster (which was later retrieved), now a car has driven through the ornamental fence that surrounds the site of Shuster's former home, damaging metal plates that tell the Superman story as it began in 1938.

'The car damaged seven of 15 large, color plates that reprint the first Superman story from "Action Comics" No. 1.

Tracey Kirksey, executive director of the Glenville Development Corp. and founding member of the Siegel and Shuster Society, said she believed a car driven by a neighbor hit the fence at Amor and Parkwood avenues. "He wants to pay to repair the damage himself," she said.

Kirksey said it will cost about $2,600 to replace the panels, which were created and installed by the Glenville Development Corporation and the Siegel and Shuster Society two years ago using a grant. She said she did not know what it will cost to rebuild the fence and reattach the panels.

May 26, 2011: Judge Rules for Release of Superman Documents

Variety.com reports that DC Comics has won a small victory in the on-going legal battle over the rights to Superman, with a federal magistrate judge ruling that documents that could prove that the Siegel's attorney Marc Toberoff poisoned its relationships with Siegel and Shuster's heirs in an attempt to gain his own control over ownership of the character's copyrights should be released to DC.

DC Comics included in its suit an unsigned document, the "Superman-Marc Toberoff Timeline," that makes reference to documents detailing Toberoff's business practices and interactions with his clients. But Toberoff says that, as he was in the midst of litigation with DC Comics over Superman, the documents were stolen from his office in 2006 by a former attorney and then delivered to Warner Bros.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Ralph Zarefsky said Toberoff "waived the privileges" when he turned in the documents last year in response to a grand jury subpeona, issued after Toberoff met with reps at the U.S. Attorney's office to discuss an investigation of the theft. Toberoff's attorneys say that they have an agreement with government that the documents would be "maintained as strictly confidential."

May 26, 2011: John Williams Honored at Symphony Hall, Boston

Last night John Williams appeared at the Symphony Hall in Boston for a tribute titled "Hooray for Hollywood" in which he was honored by those in attendance as both a genious musical composer and a movie-scoring rock star. Boston.com reports...

With the exception of the red and blue light bathing the stage, there was no visual accompaniment to the performance of Williams's "Superman'' theme, but none was needed. The hall cheered it at the first notes.

May 28, 2011: Could Superman Be Split in Two?

With recent developments in the ongoing legal battle over the rights to Superman, Variety.com looks into the possibility that ownership of Superman could be split into two separate camps... DC Comics and the heirs of Siegel and Shuster.

The Siegel and Shuster estates could wind up owning some parts of the Superman story while DC Comics owns others. The estates could get Superman's blue leotard, red cape and boots, plus an ability to leap tall buildings while DC retains villains like Lex Luthor plus Superman's ability to fly.

The question is: Could each party proceed with a subsequent project without the other's involvement?

In theory, come 2013 auds could see two parallel versions of the Man of Steel ramp up. In practice, that looks pretty unworkable.

Using a ruling from Neil Gaiman's suit against Todd McFarlane over the rights to Spawn, Anthony Cheng from the Columbia Journal of the Law & the Arts posits that one way to settle the Superman dispute would be to "split the character in two - a 1938 Superman and a Modern Superman - and allow both sides to create new works based on their versions".

However, it's hoped that both sides of this battle can come to some kind of agreement to main one Man of Steel going forward.

May 28, 2011: Tom Welling and the Superman Suit

"Smallville" Executive Producers Kelly Souders and Brain Peterson spoke with HollywoodReporter.com in the aftermath of the series finale of the 10 season TV series, and got an insight into why we never really saw Tom Welling in the Superman costume.

"What we wanted to do all along was show hints at where he was going because that is a whole different story that is yet to be told," Peterson told THR. "It felt like it gave just enough without starting to tell a whole different story that is left for all the other media.'

Peterson, who penned Part 2 of the finale with Souders, noted that the series has always been about Clark becoming the hero from the famed mythos and that the adventures of Superman were stories that have been -- and will continue to be told -- via other avenues, including Christopher Nolan's upcoming Man of Steel, set for next year. "[Showing Tom in the full suit] to me is just not super relevant and not what we were trying to do," he said.

"We were actually thrilled that everybody came together and was on board with the shots that we specifically picked," he added.

"We all wanted it to be the end of Clark Kent's journey because it's a show about Clark Kent," he said. "In the days when we saw him in a flannel shirt, the suit was the furthest thing from his mind."

May 10, 2011: Superman Celebration Update

Flood waters cannot stop Superman - Additional guest to be announced Wednesday

    Clean-up efforts underway in Metropolis

Despite the damage that near-record flood waters have caused in Metropolis, the 33rd Annual Superman Celebration will take place June 9-12 as planned. Metropolis Tourism Director Angie Shelton explains that at this time, the only event to be cancelled is the Superman Road Race. Much of the course for this race is inside Fort Massac and along streets where flooding has occurred.

But as one event is cancelled, Superman fans will learn of a new addition to the Celebration this week. The announcement of a special celebrity guest will be made on Wednesday in The Metropolis Planet, on SupermanCelebration.net and on Metropolis Tourism's facebook page.

As the flood waters are starting to slowly go down, the determination of the Metropolis community to work together and overcome this tragic event is rising. Residents of the city and county, young and old, have come together to help their neighbors through this challenging time.

May 12, 2011: Marty Pasko Talks Retro-Active Superman

With DC's recent announcement of the "Retro-Active" comic books set for publication in July/August, where classic writers and artists are reunited with classic characters Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, and Justice League of America, returning to the interpretations they are best known for. Martin Pasko, who will be writing the 1970s Superman book, spoke with the Word Balloon podcast about returning to write the Man of Steel.

Marty Pasko joins us as he returns to Metropolis writing the 70's DC Retroactive issue of Superman, drawn by Eduardo Barreto. We talk about the still amazing world of Superman. We'll discuss the career of the late Jackie Cooper who played Perry White in the first 4 modern Superman films . Despite a good working relationship with Cooper on Simon & Simon in the 80's Pasko confesses he wasn't crazy about the casting of Cooper as Perry. Marty also describes the editorial philosophy of Julie Schwartz, and goes into interesting detail about how DC's Silver and Bronze age books were written.

You'll get insights into the cast of the 50's Adventures Of Superman, Superman regulars like Mike Carlin, and Cary Bates We also discuss the way DC and Warner Bros interacted in the 90's , because Marty had the job as liason between the divisions of Warner Film TV and animation with DC.

May 6, 2011: Tom Welling on Jimmy Fallon

Tom Welling, Smallville's Clark Kent, appeared on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" early today (or late last night, as you like). He gave a candid interview about the end of his time on the show.

    Some highlights:

Tom likes a "Caddilac" margarita, in honor of Cinco De Mayo.

Judd Apatow gave Tom his first break, in the TV show Undeclared.

He said he was bummed out about the end of Smallville, and that he can't believe it's been ten years.

He wanted to take souvenirs from the set, but got little beyond a pencil, because everything was marked, catalogued, and archived.

Tom got a surprise "Congratulations, You're Unemployed" party thrown by his wife for him.

Tom's mom got to make a brief wave to the camera. His father was also in attendance.

When asked "Do you become Superman?" Tom said that Warner Brothers would kill him if he told, and was coy about whether he will get married to Lois. When asked to wink if he flies, Tom covered his face and either winked or didn't at Fallon, joking and hiding his eyes. Fallon said he didn't wink.

He joked further, saying people will or won't be pleased if they expect him to wear the suit, fly, or get married.

In a brief scene from the finale, it is hinted Lois is considering cancelling the wedding.

The series finale of "Smallville" will air on Friday, May 13th at 8.00pm on The CW.

"Smallville" star Tom Welling and his wife Jamie called into their friend Robert Dover's radio show on Tuesday afternoon to discuss life post-Clark Kent and to celebrate Tom's 34th birthday.

"In the season finale, we address the future between Clark and Lois. I think that what you'll see is that Clark is destined to be alone. It's the hero's burden. You'll see in the finale that of course, there is a future between Clark and Lois. It's how they get there that I think will be very entertaining."

April 27, 2011: Superman Plaque Stolen from Cleveland, Ohio

Police are looking for thieves who stole a plaque honoring Superman's co-creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster from a post on St. Clair Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio.

Tracey Kirksey, executive director of the Glenville Development Corporation, told police the memorial plaque was stolen two weeks ago. Thieves, perhaps believing the aluminum plaque was bronze because of its coloring, used a hacksaw to cut the large plaque off the pole.

The city put up the plaque in 2003, the 65th anniversary of the release of "Action Comics" No. 1, the first appearance of Superman. The plaque tells how the two poor Jewish Glenville High School students beat the odds to create perhaps the most recognizable fictional character in the world.

The plaque will be replaced, which will give the city the chance to correct a spelling error that appeared on the original plaque.

April 27, 2011: Tom Welling Talks Superman Movies

Zap2It.com mentions how Tom Welling revealed in his recent radio interview with Robert Dover that he was never approached to play Superman in either "Superman Returns" or "Man of Steel", but that he's looking forward to this next movie's release in 2012.

"This is the second [Superman] film that will be made since I've played Clark Kent," he says. "I know that it's very complicated due to where I was and being on a television show... I wasn't asked, I don't know if I was considered or not, but I do know they went in a different direction."

As for a possible cameo appearance, Welling says, "Not that I know of! It could be? No, I have no information supporting that allegation, unfortunately." He doesn't sound particularly averse to the idea, though.

One thing is for sure - Welling plans to see the film when it hits theaters in December 2012. "I can't wait to see it, I think they have a dream team with everyone involved and it's going to be a fantastic movie, and I'm just as excited to see it as anybody else," he says enthusiastically. "Christopher Nolan doesn't do anything that's not the best."

    April 28, 2011: Superman Renounces U.S. Citizenship

It's "Truth, Justice, and the American Way" no more, as Superman renounces his U.S. citizenship within the pages of "Action Comics #900".

The key scene takes place in "The Incident," a short story in Action Comics #900 written by David S. Goyer with art by Miguel Sepulveda. In it, Superman consults with the President's national security advisor, who is incensed that Superman appeared in Tehran to non-violently support the protesters demonstrating against the Iranian regime, no doubt an analogue for the recent real-life protests in the Middle East. However, since Superman is viewed as an American icon in the DC Universe as well as our own, the Iranian government has construed his actions as the will of the American President, and indeed, an act of war.

Superman replies that it was foolish to think that his actions would not reflect politically on the American government, and that he therefore plans to renounce his American citizenship at the United Nations the next day -- and to continue working as a superhero from a more global than national perspective. From a "realistic" standpoint it makes sense; it would indeed be impossible for a nigh-omnipotent being ideologically aligned with America to intercede against injustice beyond American borders without creating enormous political fallout for the U.S. government.

Welcome to the 93rd episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast! This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Part index. Part commentary. Part history lesson. All podcast.

All right...this one was late. Really late and we (mainly Mike) apologize for that, but after some delays and a knife fight the newest FROM CRISIS TO CRISIS is here. In this exciting episode J. David Weter (he of SUPERMAN FOREVER RADIO fame) joins Jeffrey and Michael to begin the show's coverage of one of the most awesome Superman stories ever!

PANIC IN THE SKY IS HERE!

Well, the prologue is at any rate. Before the boys and David can get to that they cover ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN #487 which, as Jeffrey points out, is the third Christmas related story in a row. While that might sound like the holiday is getting old it isn't as Bibbo plays Santa and Jimmy is reunited with a loved one in a touching and heartwarming scene that should make you at least choke up a little and if you don't we doubt very much that you have a soul. Also we get to see more Agent Liberty, which is always a treat. Then PANIC IN THE SKY begins with a prologue in ACTION COMICS #674. Old characters, some not seen since the end of EXILE, return as the major bad guy (or girl) of the story is revealed!

After that the guys look at the last issue of the ADVENTURES OF SUPERBOY comic book with issue 22 and tell you what else was going on in the DC Universe this month.

Mike and Jeffrey would like to thank J. David Weter for coming on to the show and hope he will return again someday.

May 3, 2011: Stolen Superman Plaque Found

A plaque honoring Superman's co-creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster which was stolen a few weeks ago from a post on St. Clair Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio has now been recovered.

Superman Homepage member Jamie Reigle, who is a founding member of the Siegel and Shuster Society, informs me that the plaque was recovered and turned in on Monday. It's thought that the plaque was stolen because thieves thought it was made out of bronze, when in fact it is only brown aluminum.

"Thanks to everyone who spread the word and helped us get this landmark back!" exclaimed Reigle.

The city put up the plaque in 2003, the 65th anniversary of the release of "Action Comics #1", telling the story of how Siegel and Shuster created one of the most recognizable fictional characters in the world.

It's unknown at this point in time whether the same plaque will be returned to the post it was positioned on, or whether a new one will be created to correct a spelling error that appeared on the original.

May 4, 2011: Metropolis, Illinois Under Water

Metropolis, Illinois - the home of Superman - is dealing with a disaster that could do with the help of the Man of Steel. Water levels in the Ohio River continue to rise, flooding the town, shuttering the local casino and swamping some neighborhoods away from the elevated, danger-free town square where a 15-foot statue of the Man of Steel stands sentry.

Metropolis Tourism Director Angie Shelton told the Superman Homepage, "It is just unbelievable to witness this massive flooding. But on a positive note - the people in our community, all ages, have come
together to work hard to help their neighbors."

The Ohio River at Metropolis is forecast to rise an additional 5 feet between now and Friday, May 6.

As of Tuesday, the water level is at 339.43 feet. The city of Metropolis is at a sea level of 276.6 feet. The mayor of Metropolis is advising anyone whose home is at an elevation of 340 feet or below should take precautions.

Thankfully the flood waters have not affected the Super Museum nor the Hollywood Americana Museum in Metropolis. More information can be found at kfvs12.com.
