April 26, 2011: Golden Age Superman Podcast - Episode 16

Superman fan Jon Wilson has put together a Golden Age Superman podcast covering every appearance of the character from Action Comics #1 forward.

This week on Golden Age Superman, it's bunches of Superman stories in the first episode to have both the monthly and quarterly books in full effect. In Superman #2, reprinting several stories from the newspapers, the Man of Tomorrow helps a depressed ex boxing champ, "Superman Champions World Peace" and kills a WHOLE buncha people along the way, and stops a skyscraper construction project from being sabotaged in "Superman and the Skyscrapers". Then in Action Comics #17, the Man of Steel learns that the passenger liners of a shipping line are getting blown up one by one, and you'll never guess who's behind it, on his way to world domination. All this and an announcement of a new show I'm going to be involved in! Enjoy and tell all your friends!

  • April 26, 2011: Humorous Article on What Super Power Superman Wants

TheOnion.com has posted an article online written from Superman's point of view, answering the question, "If you could have any superpower you wanted, what would it be?"

Most people can't answer right away because there's so many to choose from. But not me. I know exactly what I'd pick, hands down, every time: invisibility.

Just think about invisibility for a second. No one can see you. You're there but not there. You could be in the same room with someone, standing inches away, and they wouldn't realize it. Sure, they could reach out and touch you if they wanted - but why would they? They wouldn't know you were there! Heck, an invisible person could be watching me this very second, and if not for the fact that my super hearing allows me to detect a heartbeat anywhere in the world, I'd have no way of knowing.

April 11, 2011: Superman Fan Kaman Stowell

Superman Homepage member Kaman Stowell and his love of Superman was the subject of an article for the St. Cloud Times.

In a recent interview in his room, where he sleeps surrounded by the comic-book legend, the senior from Sartell said the TV series "Smallville" is to blame for his obsession with the "S" shield.

He had seen the movies from the 1970s starring Christopher Reeves in all his curled-tuft glory, but it was a post-millennial farm boy played by Tom Welling who made Stowell begin to cover his room in primary colors.

About a year ago, after acquiring almost 300 objects and thousands of dollars worth of tradable pieces, Stowell started to periodically upload video reviews of "Smallville" episodes, Superman movies and comics to the Internet site YouTube.

April 13, 2011: New Setback for Warner Bros. in Superman Legal Battle

HollywoodReporter.com reports on the latest development in the ongoing legal battle over the rights to Superman, with U.S. Magistrate Judge Ralph Zaresky rejecting the WB's attempts to pry open secret documents that were said to show an agreement between the estates of Superman co-creators Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegelnot to make further copyright deals with the studio.

Last year, the studiofiled a lawsuitagainst the recently deceased Joanne Siegel and her lawyer,Marc Toberoff, for interfering with its rights via allegedly shady joint venture agreements. To that end, it has demanded production of sensitive documents.

The documents are said to be "consent agreements" between the Siegel and Shuster estates and their existence came to light during settlement discussions during the first phase of the Siegel trial. Once Toberoff mentioned the presence of these agreements, Warners almost immediately demanded the documents be shared. During the first trial, Toberoff successfully got a judge to agree that those documents were protected by attorney-client privilege.

The case continues, with debates on who owns what now in the hands of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

April 14, 2011: From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast

Welcome to the 91st episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast! This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Part index. Part commentary. Part history lesson. All podcast.

The discussion of the Superman books with a January 1992 cover date continues this week as Jeff and Mike discuss ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN #486 and ACTION COMICS #673. Both issues take place during Thanksgiving which makes sense considering they were released around November of 1991. In ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN Jimmy continues to deal with being homeless as Superman fights the Intergang robot known as Purge. In ACTION COMICS Bruno Mannheim escapes from Stryker's Island leading to a "final" face-off between him and the Man of Steel. Quick heads up; things don't go so well for Mannheim. In addition to all of that the boys go through the ads from the January 1992 books, Mike tells you what else was going on in the DCU and more of YOUR e-mails are read. It is a shorter episode this time around but that doesn't mean it isn't full of Man of Steel goodness!

April 14, 2011: Tiny Titans Turns the DC Universe Pink

DC's "The Source" blog gives us an inside look at "Tiny Titans #39" an issue that turns the DC Universe pink... thanks to a quote taken from "Superman: The Movie".

"The whole inspiration for this issue came from a familiar line to most comic and movie buffs, 'I like pink very much, Lois!' In this issue, we take that line to heart and turn everything PINK! We get to use the entire DC Universe and spin them with our take. I can't believe issue #39 is here already. It seems like we were just getting underway with the first issue! This book is so much fun, I can't wait until we're talking about issue #139!" Franco continued. "The Pink Issue! This is an idea we had for a long time! Being a lifelong fan of the Superman movie, working on this issue brought out the 8-year-old in me! Aw Yeah PINK! Aw Yeah DC! Aw Yeah TITANS!" Art replied.

April 15, 2011: More Cassidy Freeman Interviews

Cassidy Freeman participated in a few interviews this week, talking about the final episodes of "Smallville".

She spoke to Zap2It.com about how great it was to finally get to work with Michael Rosenbaum:

That's not to say she didn't give him a hard time for holding out so long on finalizing a deal to come back as Lex Luthor. "I mean I obviously gave him the s*** he deserved, but I think he was expecting that," she laughs. "We'd heard so much about each other that it was almost like we knew each other when we showed up, which was really cool and helped out with us trying to figure out how to work together. But I'm thankful, I'm thankful I got to spend time with him. He's a really nice guy."

TV Guide Magazine asked her about the series finale:

TV Guide Magazine: Now obviously, you can't tell us anything juicy about the finale. But is it something you think fans will just love?

Freeman: Yeah. I think it's a really, really beautiful ending. I remember when we finally got the last scripts, I called Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders to tell them what an incredible job they did. I read it and got chills. It's awesome.

TVSquad.com asked her to expand on her role in the finale:

What else can you tell us about your role in the finale?

Well, [as for Tess's choice between good and evil], we won't find that out until the finale, which is really cool for my character. It builds up and it builds up and it builds up and you're not sure, you're not sure, and you find out at the end which way she goes. It's really cool.

While TVLine.com asked her what the wrap party was like:

TVLINE | Was last month's Smallville wrap party 100-percent revelry, or were there moments of misty-eyed nostalgia?

It's difficult to get misty-eyed when you're in the Vancouver Club with a band playing loudly and people introducing you to their significant others. But it was emotional on set. I've only been there for a little bit of it, and it still felt like a big change; I can't imagine what it was like for Tom and Erica.

April 18, 2011: Superman Runs Marathon for Guinness World Record

David Stone, a 41 year old man in London, set a new world record for the fastest marathon run dressed as a superhero this past weekend, running 26.2 miles in 2:42.46.

When he is not undoing Lex Luthor's mischief as Superman, Mr Stone, 41, works not as a reporter for the Daily Planet, but as a garden centre manager, in Exmouth, in Devon.

Dressed in a cape and figure-hugging blue suit, Superman swapped his red boots for a pair of trainers for this mission - and managed to shave 49 seconds off the previous record set by Batman's sidekick Robin in 2009.

April 18, 2011: Picture Window Books Announces Super-Pet Contest Winner

Winning Characters to be Illustrated by Eisner Award-Winner Art Baltazar in Upcoming DC Super-Pets Book

Picture Window Books, an imprint of Capstone, the leading publisher of children's books and digital products and services, announces the winner of its nationwide student writing contest "My Pet is Super!" The contest asked children to write an article for an imaginary newspaper, The Daily Planet, about why their own pet is super. It was inspired by the publisher's DC Super-Pets adventure book series featuring the crime-fighting pets of everyone's favorite super heroes.

Cloey Nyberg, a third grader at Pyrtle Elementary School in Lincoln, Neb., is the first-place winner selected from more than 450 entries. Cloey's fictional characters, Luna Moon (a Beagle with super-sniffing talents) and Sprightly Steve (a Pomeranian/Chihuahua with lightning speed), will be featured characters illustrated by Eisner award-winning comic book artist Art Baltazar in a DC Super-Pets book. Cloey will receive the original illustration of her characters as well as copies of the book, available Jan. 1, 2012 in hardcover and paperback formats.

Cloey's imaginary newspaper article was set in Metropolis Park where Luna and Steve used their combined super powers to save a group of third graders from a brush fire. The city mayor rewarded the canine duo for their heroic deeds with medals and a year's supply of dog treats. To see the winning entry, visit www.CapstoneKids.com.

"Students took us on adventures from Los Angeles to Maine and we learned about the heroic deeds of all kinds of super-pets - from dogs, cats, rabbits, and gerbils, to pigs, goldfish, and even a vanishing chicken. We're impressed with the incredibly talented kids who brought us such fun and well-written stories, and we can't wait to begin working on the DC Super-Pets title with our two new characters Luna and Steve!" said Michael Dahl, Editorial Director of Capstone Fiction.

In addition to selecting a first place winner, Picture Window Books also selected the top 50 contest entries to receive two free DC Super-Pets books, one for the student and one for the school library.

April 7, 2011: Kelly Sue DeConnick on Writing Supergirl

ComicBookResources.com caught up with Kelly Sue DeConnick to talk to her about her 3-issue run on the monthly "Supergirl" comic book title.

CBR News: Your first issue of "Supergirl" hits stores June 15. What can you tell us about your arc?

Kelly Sue DeConnick: Gifted kids have started disappearing from the area surrounding Stanhope College and one of them reappears in Metropolis, unable to tell them where she's been or why. Lois Lane and Supergirl team up to investigate.

And there's a classic villain who should look familiar to DCU readers. How's that for a taunt? Don't worry; I don't actually keep it a secret for long.

With regards to the Kara/Lois team-up, what's your take on their relationship?

In my take, Lois assumes a familiarity that's unearned and the two have to figure their relationship out. It's awkward, but there's humor and mutual respect at the base, so they get there.

Read the entire interview at the CBR website.

Look for the first part of Kelly's 3-issue run starting in "Supergirl #65" available June 15th.

April 8, 2011: Henry Cavill on Preparing for Superman

Newsarama.com conducted an interview with Henry Cavill, speaking to him about his new film "Immortals", but also asking him about how he'll be preparing for the Superman role.

"Biggest challenge on this one was maintaining the physical shape because it was extraordinary difficult with the hours we had and like I said, fourteen hours minimum with a half hour lunch and you can't eat that much and you're in every day. There's no time to sit back and relax and settle and then have your recovery day and have to go back in. It was nonstop brutal. That was the toughest thing," he said.

"I think on Superman it will be slightly different because I've approached it with the experience of Immortals and I've said, 'Look, guys, I'm going to need recovery time and I'm going to need this, I'm going to need that, if possible, please, please.' And I think the most difficult thing with Superman is going to be making everyone...doing a true justice to the role while reimagining it."

While we were wrapping up our interview, someone asked Cavill to sign a Superman action figure. It was his first. Newsarama told the British actor he better get used to it.

"Superman is, I think these days he's such a universal idea," said Cavill. "And yes, he was raised in America as a character but I don't think the Brits see it any different, they see him as the coolest, biggest and best superhero out there."

April 10, 2011: Michael Shannon Cast as General Zod

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Michael Shannon will star in the role of General Zod in director Zack Snyder's new Superman film, titled "Man of Steel."

Snyder stated, "Zod is not only one of Superman's most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don't. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role."
As General Zod, Shannon will go toe-to-toe with Henry Cavill, who plays the new Clark Kent/Superman in the film. The main cast also includes Amy Adams as Lois Lane, and Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as Martha and Jonathan Kent.

Michael Shannon was honored with an Academy Award® nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Sam Mendes' "Revolutionary Road," with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. He will next be seen in Sony Pictures Classics', "Take Shelter," from director/writer Jeff Nichols.

April 4, 2011: Henry Cavill on Preparing for Superman

Collider.com has posted a video interview with Henry Cavill and Luke Evans at WonderCon this past weekend, speaking with them about their film "Immortals". Towards the end of the interview Cavill is asked about Superman and how he's preparing for the role.

Cavill: At this early stage it's just doing some foundation training. The guys from Gym Jones, Mark Twight is training me. I've done about a month so far of foundation training. Really hard stuff, to get my body used to the real stuff, which is coming up soon. So at the moment it's just getting my body in the right aesthetic shape.

I heard you're filming in Chicago. Is that true?

Cavill: Possibly. I don't know how much I can tell you.

Zack talked about how it's gonna be very realistic. Is that something that excites you?

Cavill: I think it's a great way to go, because superheroes themselves are so unrealistic that to add a realism to them just makes them easier to associate with and attaches more directly to a real life imagination.

April 4, 2011: Golden Age Superman Podcast - Episode 14

Superman fan Jon Wilson has put together a Golden Age Superman podcast covering every appearance of the character from Action Comics #1 forward.

Here in this episode of Golden Age Superman, I cover the two issues of Action Comics that were released in June. (Why were there two? Listen and all shall be made known!) First, in Action Comics #14, Superman is lured into a trap by the Ultra-Humanite, who managed to survive last issue's plane crash. And Ultra sets the standard for all supervillain traps to come by making it way more convoluted and prone to fail than it needed to be. Then in Action Comics #15, Superman goes hunting for treasure, hoping the gold from a sunken Spanish galleon will save a nearly bankrupt boys' home.

April 1, 2011: Sarah Lancaster to Star in New Lois Lane TV Series

The CW today announced that Sarah Lancaster, best known for her roles of Rachel in "Saved by the Bell: The New Class" and Madison Kellner on "Everwood", has been cast as Lois Lane for a new TV series to spinoff from "Smallville".

Titled "Superman's Girlfriend: Lois Lane", the new TV series was pitched to The CW by "Smallville" co-creators Al Gough and Miles Miller, and is scheduled to premiere in September 2011.

"I'm extremely excited about this wonderful opportunity," explained Lancaster. "Lois Lane is such an iconic character, a role model for women throughout the years. I'm really looking forward to showing young women everywhere that Lois Lane is more than just Superman's girlfriend, she's a strong feminist in her own right. She doesn't need a man to define her."

And that's the kicker, Superman won't be in the series at all. He'll be alluded to, but never seen. This is Lois Lane's show. It's unknown at this point in time if we'll see Clark Kent, Jimmy Olsen or Perry White.

The role was offered to Erica Durance, but the "Smallville" actress turned down the role fearing she'd be typecast.

April 1, 2011: Warner Bros. Reveals Superman Movie Costume Design

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures have revealed the costume design for the new Superman movie to be directed by Zack Snyder.

Designed by "Spider-Man" film costume designer James Acheson, the new Superman costume strays from the traditional design seen in the comic books, but remains true to the image of Superman, while giving the Man of Steel a more modern and streamlined appearance.

Snyder stated, "We felt that Superman needed to step away from the old circus strong man, red underwear on the outside, flowing cape design that was looking very dated by today's superhero movie standard. The design James [Acheson] created will once again put Superman at the forefront of superheroes worldwide."

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

Slated for release in December 2012, the new Superman movie will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

April 2, 2011: Snyder on the Reality of Superman Visual Effects

DigitalSpy.co.uk spoke with Zack Snyder about the visual effects necessary for a film like Superman.

Snyder said: "Let me just say one thing about Superman: he can't do anything that's not a visual effect. He can walk around and talk, but if he's going to do something physical, that's a visual effect, because he's Superman.

"I think in the past people have tried to figure out how to do that with strings and putting cars on hydraulics and having him stand under it, but we're really trying to work on a way of doing this that really makes that feel real."

He added: "[We're] trying to understand the actual physics of what would have to happen for those things to happen. It just brings reality to that whole concept of picking up a car or whatever. That's gotta be completely based on reality."

April 3, 2011: Henry Cavill Talks Superman

MTV.com spoke with Henry Cavill at WonderCon in San Francisco yesterday, where he was promoting his new film "Immortals", and asked him how his Superman would differ from those who have come before him.

"That's tough to say; it's very early days yet," the 27-year-old actor acknowledged. "Superman is Superman, after all. There's only so much of a change you can make to that."

As Cavill, finally, diplomatically, put it, "It's going to be different, but not so different that it's unrecognizable." He then concluded with a laugh,"How's that for an answer?"

While Cavill told Movieline.com that he's had some costume fittings for the Superman costume, although he's still fine-tuning his body shape.

The next step will be donning that iconic Superman costume, which is still being designed. "There have been some concept costume fittings," said Cavill. "I'm so excited - it's fantastic. Really, really fantastic. Sometimes... I mean, I'm sitting here talking to you about being Superman, for example. And then it dawns on me and I go, Oh my God, I'm Superman!' It's really exciting and an incredible opportunity, so as soon as I'm jumping into the costume and stuff it starts to become real."

Additionally, HitFix.com asked Henry Cavill about winning the role of Superman second try around.

April 3, 2011: Superman Film Plot Details?

MovieNewz.com claims to have received details from a "source" outlining the synopsis for the up-coming Superman movie.

The claim is that Superman is seen as a threat by the military (lead by General Sam Lane), who are disturbed by his alien origins, his powers and his motives, and use remnants of his home world against him in the form of a Kryptonite powered super solider... Metallo.

Here is the alleged synopsis posted on MovieNewz.com...

In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Henry Cavill) is a young twenty-something journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond anyone's imagination. Transported to Earth years ago from Krypton, an advanced alien planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question - Why am I here? Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Diane Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner), Clark soon discovers that having super abilities means making very difficult decisions. But when the world needs stability the most, it comes under attack. Will his abilities be used to maintain peace or ultimately used to divide and conquer? Clark must become the hero known as "Superman," not only to shine as the world's last beacon of hope but to protect the ones he loves.

True or false? Time will tell. But for now we present it to you as just another rumor doing the rounds.

Thanks to Bob Marshall for the lead on this info.

March 29, 2011: Robinov Confirms Justice League Movie

The LA Times website has published a second article about Jeff Robinov, the president of the Warner Bros. motion picture group, confirming that a Justice League movie is indeed in the pipeline.

Robinov said a new Justice League script is in the works. Also being written for Warner are scripts featuring the Flash and Wonder Woman, who could be spun off into their own movies after Justice League. Though Wonder Woman is also in the works as a television pilot for NBC produced by Warner, Robinov dismissed that as a sticking point. "Wonder Woman could be a film as well, the same way that 'Superman Returns' came out while 'Smallville' was on," he said, referring to the 2006 film that put Brandon Routh in the capeand the television show starring Tom Welling that is now in its 10th and final season.

Robinov knows that the most bankable part of his superhero empire has been Nolan and his Gotham City films - the studiohas yet todeliver a 21st century superhero blockbuster hit without Nolan in the director's seat. Batman will continue to be a centerpiece propertybeyondnext year's "The Dark Knight Rises" and Nolan's departure from the franchise. "We have the third Batman, but then we'll have to reinvent Batman... Chris Nolan and [producing partner and wife] Emma Thomas will be producing it, so it will be a conversation with them about what the next phase is."

March 29, 2011: Military Hardware Needed for Superman Movie

The Toronto Sun reports that Canada has missed out on hosting the production of the new Superman movie due to a lack of military hardware being available.

Superman: Man of Steel will be filmed in the Chicago area instead of Alberta, Lindsay Blackett, the province's minister of culture and community spirit confirmed Monday.

"It was us or them," he said of the film that was one of two feature films worth $100 million and $200 million that had looked to land in Alberta.

"From what I understand (the production) needed aircraft carriers and the Canadian military doesn't have those.

"They needed attack helicopters and things like that and we just don't have them and the U.S. was willing to give them whatever they wanted."
